Pig Records was created by Bristol-based saxophonist and composer Kevin Figes as an outlet for his original contemporary jazz projects. From the labels initial release in 2010 an impressive array of performers have collaborated with Kevin, interpreting his music on a succession of recordings and live work.

Each release has offered something new and all have received excellent national reviews. Tonights show is a celebration of the release of two new recordings by the Kevin Figes Quartet+ and the Octet, together with the first proper launch of the label. As well as performances from the above acts, fellow Pig Records artists Jim Blomfield Trio, Balanca and Simon Presto will also be performing. A fascinating evenings music in store with some amazing musicians, some visuals and free cup cakes!

    Jim Blomfield Trio

Jim Blomfield (Piano) Roshan 'Tosh' Wijetunge (Bass) Mark Whitlam (Drums)

Having led and composed for quartet and septet ensembles for many years (as featured on his ASC Records release ‘Peaks and Troughs’), Jim decided to work in the more intimate setting of the piano trio. With the brilliantly dynamic and versatile Mark Whitlam on drums and Roshan ‘Tosh’ Wijetunge on double bass, over the last few years the trio have been developing their own sound through the rehearsing and gigging of Blomfield’s varied and often intricate compositions, the result being an attention to detail, musical dynamics and an organic level of trio interplay. It is these qualities that have come to fruition on their debut critically acclaimed album release ‘Wave Forms and Sea Changes’ as well as having been so appealing to audiences during the trio’s live performances.

'Brilliant pianist Jim Blomfield often packs more into a single solo than seems wholly decent.' (Jazz UK)

Balança Cathy Jones (Vocals) Tristram Cox (Guitar) Kevin Figes (Flute/Sax)

Balança's music draws on both Jazz and the music of Brazil. Their material ranges from the Bossa Novas and Sambas of Jobim and João Gilberto, through to the music of contemporary Brazilian Jazz artists including Joyce and Hermeto Pascoal and Jazz artists such as Pat Metheny and Chick Corea. Cathy Jones and Kevin Figes provide arrangements and original material lending a fresh and contemporary feel to the music. In addition to delivering Portugese lyrics in an authentic and evocative style, Cathy frequently takes an instrumental role, joining Kevin Figes' flute and saxophone to create unison lines and melodies. The rhythms and grooves of Brazil are at the heart of Balança's sound with Cathy's assured percussion creating exciting patterns and textures. Balança's performances are uplifting, energetic and eminently danceable.

Simon Presto Simon Presto (Percussion) Dean Brodrick (Keyboard) Sam Tompkins (Percussion) Cori Bona (Vocals) Sol Ahmed (Bass) Jim Blomfield (Piano)

Simon Presto writes music that is worthy of the present, embracing the disciplined rhythmic structures of his afro-centric influences. The spirit of mother Africa burns brightly, illuminating the songscapes that travel at speed across borders blurring any boundaries between genres. Simon's is the music of a beautiful possible future: a music with a multicultural soul; fearless, open hearted, fresh, fast, funky and free.
